Sakura, princess of the kingdom of Clow, is in love with her childhood friend, a young archaeologist named Syaoran, but does not get to see him often because of his work. Sakura has resolved to confess to him, but before she can do so, a tragic event occurs...
Syaoran sees Sakura standing on top of a mysterious symbol in the ruins he is excavating. Strange wings appear on her back, and a mysterious force tries to pull her into the walls of the ruins. Syaoran rescues her in time, but the wings upon her back shatter, becoming thousands of feather-like fragments. Yukito, the high priest of the Clow kindom, tells Syaoran that those feathers are the fragments of Sakura's heart, her memories. They have been scattered across the dimensions, and without them, Princess Sakura will die.
Yukito sends Syaoran and Sakura to the dimensional witch, Yuko. There they meet Fye, a mysterious magician who hides behind a false smile, and Kurogane, a warrior who wishes to return to his own world. Yuko gives them a strange little creature called Mokona, who has the power to transport them through the dimensions to collect Sakura's feathers. There is a price, of course: with each feather returned to Sakura, a part of her memory is restored, but no matter how many feathers are returned to her, she will never remember Syaoran.
A mysterious enemy is watching over their journey, however....
